25//25//25
For the 25th Anniversary of Sawtooth ARI, an exhibition was created that featured 25 works from 25 artists who have had a part in building the gallery into what it is today. I was feeling inspired by Tracey Emin so I embroidered an impromptu poem on some old fabric. I had just purchased an embroidery machine and wanted to try it out.
“Making art is something I have always done, something I had an aptitude for growing up. In high school I started to take it more seriously when I understood I could make a career out of being creative.
I started of in graphic design and printmaking, then in University moved into textiles and conceptual art.
Art is a compulsion and a catharsis. It is a way for me to contextualise the world around me and how I experience it. It is something that emerges as a way to understand the world.
My most impactful art moment so far was presenting an interactive art experience at a festival. Spending so much time organising and designing something that an audience will interact with, then seeing how they do that and what the outcomes are was such an insightful and moving experience.
I had my first solo show with Sawtooth and have been included in multiple group shows. Sawtooth is the space that I was able to find my footing and develop my practice in the gallery space.
Sawtooth sits perfectly at the intersection of professional gallery practice and grassroots community building. It is hybrid, versatile and flexible and is something the art world needs more of.”
